The job market in Phoenix is slow, to say the least. One type of ad that is perpetually popping up is the one that is searching for new realtors. Frequently, they say that they will offer training and assistance to get you started. And, of course, the ads always promote real estate as a lucrative career. Is it true or just another scam?
Generally, if it is a major player in the real estate game, it is not a scam. Century 21, Coldwell-Banker and the like all regularly hire new agents. They are obviously legit. The promises are, too. What the ads don’t say is how hard it is to achieve success. Real estate is a tough business and many, many new agents quit in frustration. You need both ambition and a healthy savings account to get started in real estate, especially in a market like this. Do not expect people to be beating down your door to buy or sell their house with you. In fact, it could take up to six months before you earn your first commission. If anyone tells you otherwise, they are quite mistaken.
You will, of course, be required to attend the necessary classes and pass your state exam for your real estate license. Those initial classes, however, only teach you about the legal issues of buying and selling in Arizona. They do not teach you how to be a successful Agent. Drive and determination are essential, but they are not the only skills needed for success. You need to understand marketing, both how to market a house for sale as well as how to market yourself to your next client. In fact, it is much more work than many people realize. Much. More.
