Phoenix Arizona Unemployment

Hundreds turn out to Job Fair in light of high unemployment.

As originally reported on KTAR, hundreds of people have recently showed up to a Phoenix area job fair. So many people were there that the line actually snaked out of the hotel where it was being held.

The number of people who showed up is not surprising. The Phoenix-Mesa-Glendale, AZ Metropolitan Statistical Area ranks number 173 according to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics with an unemployment rate of 8.5% being recorded last November 2011.

Phoenix Employment Outlook

The Phoenix area has always been a major gateway to the southwest. Tourism is a major employment sector in the area, as is manufacturing. Phoenix has experienced a significant economic slump since the start of the recession and the unemployment rate has followed suit. Currently it sits at just over 9%, on par with the national average of 10.2%. The area has been affected by less tourist traffic and major demand cuts in the agriculture, electronics, and chemicals manufacturing industries. Teachers to Be Laid Off in Phoenix

While teacher demand has been slowly but steadily increasing across the country—oftentimes one of the few job areas to increase, perhaps because of the burst of people needing new job training—in Phoenix, teachers are about to face a massive layoff.

The cuts will likely take place in the upcoming year due to issues with the state budget. Though Sate Superintendent of Public Instruction, Tom Horne, revealed that previous layoffs were rescinded after they were issues, this round won’t be able to go away.
